NHL Lockout Update

The NHL lockout is still in full effect and heading into it's third month with no signs of ending anytime soon.  The league has already lost over $100 million in revenue and they continue to lose money everyday.  The main argument regarding the lockout is the ongoing issue between players and owners.  The owners want to reduce player revenue from 57% to 46% to make revenue shares more fair for owners.  Owners also want a set maximum term of five years for player contracts to avoid long term deals that turn into nine figure salaries for the league's best players.  With an attempt to help put an end to the lockout, a professional mediator was brought in to help regulate and hopefully get a deal sorted out to create a new collective bargaining agreement.

In my opinion, I don't understand why the owners want to take so much action  against these athletes who go through so much more in a season and put their bodies on the line night in and night out for the owners.  The players deserve the money they get paid because of how dangerous the sport of hockey can potentially become.  At the end of the day everyone in the business is being paid at least six figures and it doesn't matter if the players are receiving better benefits than the owners. They are the faces of the franchise.  Still, I understand that this is a business and the dealings need to be handled fairly.

With the lockout, the NHL has already cancelled the highly anticipated Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs as well as the All-Star game at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
